How to Draw a Fat Stick Man

It is not obvious how to stick to the single straight line method of drawing figures AND draw a fat person.

This page has a few ideas for creating reasonable looking stick people who are not size zero.  Obviously a larger pen width is a good start.

As regards the whole weight issue.  There is nothing wrong with being a little on the large side.  If you are happy and can still find clothes that cover most of the important bits that is good.

We could eat a little less chocolate and a few more carrots but who is to judge?  A jury consisting entirely of stick thin people perhaps?  They can go eat some celery.

Anyhow no one on this page, especially me, has a weight problem.  Let's draw some fat guys.
First a simple cartoon where a larger width felt tip pen is used to add some weight to make a stick guy look fat.

It is the simplest method to quickly add weight if you don't count going large with every pizza order.

When Stick Men Put on Some Weight

Roch guy dances and throws dollars in the air
Most stick men are stick thin.  That is kind of where the name comes from.

Some get lazy.  Others get rich.  They eat a bit more than they should and exercise a little less than they could.

With a comfortable sofa and a large TV they gradually lose their slim young shape and put on some poundage.

The guy in the picture has made it in life.  He wears a fancy hat and smokes a big cigar.  He stands proud with his stomach pushed out.

He owns that belly or at least has a sizeable down payment on it.

Some Fat Drawing Ideas

The picture shows a few examples of where to put the gut.  Whether it should cover the whole front of the body or just be a little pot belly.

None of them work very well.

The problem is combining a stick and a fat figure makes little sense.  It is hard to be both without being a victim of some poor plastic surgery.

That is why to make the fat guy stick figure work you really need to add in a body and preferably some clothes.  It is no longer a traditional stick figure but trying to make stick and fat work together is too hard.

Fat Stick Figure Front and Profile

Fat stick figure drawing - front and profile
Having decided that a normal stick man can not create a realistic overweight image it is time to add a few more lines.

This can be done by simply drawing a stick guy, adding the extra lines and then removing the original guide lines.  He has more dimension that way.

The fat guy in red is shown front on and in profile.  Front on is obvious, a circle or oval shape body creates the fat idea.

The profile has less of an oval shape.  Oval at the front but flatter at the back.  Fat gathers on the stomach area - whereas even the largest of people have flattish backs.

To be fair to the guy he is not really overweight, more comfortable looking.  It is just that compared to stick men everyone looks fat!

Illustrating Weight

Here a couple of pictures where simple methods are used to demonstrate the weight of our fat guy.

The first one is a seesaw where one large guy outweighs three slim people.

In this drawing a boat provides an easy to understand image of what happens when you put a fat guy at one end and his girl friend at the other.  The big plus is that he has a girl friend although they may not go boating again.

Fat and Proud

Fat naked stickman
I don't want to alarm anyone but here is another guy looking at himself in the mirror.  It is not a pretty sight.

He might be thinking it is time to get down the gym or buy an exercise bike.  Take up skipping or something, anything to get those pounds off.

Maybe he is planning how his life will be in six months when he has slimmed down.  He will feel fitter and happier.  The woman next door will notice the new look and finally agree to go on a date.

Or wondering if those pants still fit and whether he can fit another extra large pizza in there.

Lose Weight Nonsense

Keep Calm Dieting humour shows celery eater and
One shocking theory put around by weirdos and vegetarian types is that if you eat less you can lose weight!

It is confusing marketing from the carrot and celery manufacturers who will do anything to push their pointless stick-shaped vegetables into unsuspecting consumers.

As if anyone thinks eating a stick of celery instead of a beefburger and a packet of crisps will help lose weight!

Next thing you know they will be telling us to exercise more.

More Fat Man Drawing

Fat stick man rests hands on belly while wearing too tight tee with
Here is another attempt at drawing a fat stick man.

He is wearing a too tight tee which doesn't cover the muffin top with side and front overhang.

The XXXL tee says "phat" on it which may be an ironic comment on fat politics and size issues or an item of clothing left over from the nineties.

He does the contented thing of resting his hands on his stomach as though expecting a baby to come out of it.

He looks happy.  That may be because he doesn't eat celery and lettuce.  Those food groups don't have the same cheer up factor as a bacon burger.

The Fat Evolution Joke

Our thin stick figure is gradually evolving into a large fat blob of a man.  The round guy is the ultimate example of the species.

He can roll all the way to the pizza bar or better still get it delivered.

When the Fat Lady Sings

Fat lady sings
We can't really tell if the woman singing is fat or not.

It was drawn to illustrate the expression - "It ain't over till the fat lady sings".

At the end of performances in the old days they used to wheel out a fat lady who did a bit of singing before the place shut and you could go home.

Sometimes they say "She has got some lungs on her" which probably means how well she can sing.

Or
"You don't get many of them to the pound" which has nothing to do with singing or currency.

Fat or Pregnant

Fat man and pregnant woman in profile
There is a difference between a fat and a pregnant person where you need to be very careful.

The man in the picture is clearly fat.  He won't mind you saying "Fat boy" to him because it is fair comment.  He is a man of considerable substance.

The woman is more tricky.  She might be fat but she could also be pregnant.  If you congratulate her and she turns out just to be a little on the large side she may not be very happy.

From a drawing point of view they are similar but don't tell them I said that.

The McDonald's Olympics

McDonald's Olympics - fat guys race to the fast food counter
This picture shows three fat guys hurrying to the fast food outlet to stock up on burgers, fries and Coke.

It was drawn in response to learning who the main sponsors of the Olympic Games are.  Not corporations that might normally be associated with sport or athletics.

How many 100 metres finalists consume Coke and burgers as part of their fitness regime?  Not many is my guess.

Anyhow, these guys are in a rush to get their next thousands of calories before watching more athletics from the comfort of their living room.

How do sports, TV, media and fast food corporations justify this bizarre association of unhealthy calories and sporting achievement?  Money.  It's all about the money.

Fat AND Sporty

Fat sumo wrestler in black nappy
So what if you are a bit on the large size and you want to be sporty and get the girls?  Is it even possible?

Of course it is!

Go down the store or better still - Amazon - and buy the largest black nappy you can find.
Remove all other clothing and tie your hair up in a bun.  Assume a squatting position and hey presto... Sumo style!

The No Fat Stickmen Cartoon

There is a cartoon which has been copied round the internet endlessly.  It is the "Why are there no fat stickmen?" picture which shows four normal sticks and one fat one who looks like a penguin.

The problem is - the cartoon doesn't answer the question or have a punch-line.

We don't know why there are no fat stick men and stupidly there is one in the picture anyway.

Maybe that IS the punch-line.  Look!  There he is.  This page has done its best to prove there are plenty of them.

When Scales Lie

Scales are not always accurate.  They can be downright rude.  That's when they need to be recycled and you console yourself with some crisps.

The Fat Finger Expression

Fat finger - large hand holds small device
Sometimes in the news someone sells a billion shares for a penny or launches cruise missiles instead of logging into their Facebook account.

They call it "fat finger" which is a nice visual.

As screens and buttons get smaller our fingers get fatter.

It is obvious where that can go wrong.

What to Call Fat People?

Calling someone fat is now the equivalent of verbal abuse.  The word will soon be banned from the dictionary so we cannot upset some lardy overweight person.  "Obese", which also means fat, will follow into the ever-growing list of words that must not be used.

So if you need to shout down the street at a fat person - what are you supposed to say?  You can't really shout "Who ate all the pies" unless you are at a football match.

It is probably best to say nothing at all.  Not unless they are really very fat.  Then they will be fairly thick-skinned - which they need to be with all that lard inside them.

"It's not over until you finished singing" is too long-winded.
"Big-boned" may be misconstrued.
"Slow metabolism" doesn't work on any level.

Best to copy what women say when they meet a friend who has put on some weight.

"You look healthy".

Diet Over

That is the end of this fat page.  Hopefully it was a sensitive and caring look at fat issues and how to caricature them.

There are plenty of slim stickmen elsewhere on this site.
